The Little Green Schoolhouse is an inquiry and play based program designed for two and three year olds to begin exploring a school-like setting. The program allows children to gain confidence in a social setting and engage with other children and new adults. The program allows children to practice their growing developmental skills while getting used to being separated from their caregivers. It is based within a home atmosphere to connect the school setting with the home setting and to provide a comfortable and casual community-based environment in which to learn and explore. We will use inquiry based learning, which is driven from the children's questions and interests. This allows for the children to be empowered to be involved in their own learning process in order to produce a fuller understanding of different developmentally stimulating topics. Working collaboratively within a small group, the children are both the teachers and the learners. The small groups are of mixed ages to also allow for children to learn from each other and become both compassionate and empathic towards each other. In the same vein, play will be used extensively to allow children to use their knowledge, language, and skills to learn about a variety of topics that interest them. Play is also a great way for children to begin understanding early literacy through the use of real life materials such as menus, signs, books and magazines.
